Ingredients

  • 2 tsp loose-leaf smoky black tea (like Lapsang Souchong) or 2 tea bags
  • 1 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 45 black peppercorns
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 3 green cardamom pods, slightly crushed
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 12 tablespoons brown sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 star anise (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small pot, bring water to a boil. Add black peppercorns, cloves, cardamom pods, and cinnamon stick (and star anise if using). Simmer for about 5 minutes.
  2. Add smoky black tea to the pot and steep for 3-4 minutes based on desired strength.
  3. Stir in milk and brown sugar. Simmer on low heat for another 3-4 minutes while stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove from heat and strain into mugs to serve.
