Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 small Granny Smith apples
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup white sugar
  • 0.5 cup packed brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup water
  • 1 (9 inch) double-crust pie pastry

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Peel, core, and slice the Granny Smith apples thinly.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Stir in the flour to create a paste; cook for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  3. Add white sugar, brown sugar, and water to the saucepan; bring to a boil then reduce heat and simmer for 3-5 minutes before removing from heat.
  4. Press one portion of the double-crust pastry into the bottom and sides of a 9-inch pie pan. Roll out the remaining pastry to create strips for the lattice top.
  5. Fill the bottom crust with apple slices, making a slight mound in the center. Weave the pastry strips over the filling to form a lattice design.
  6. Pour the butter-sugar mixture over the lattice crust carefully.
  7. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes, then reduce temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and continue baking for another 35-45 minutes until apples are soft.
